Childline

Childline is a free, confidential service in the UK that offers support to children and young people up to the age of 19. It was founded in 1986 by Esther Rantzen and is now a part of the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). The service provides a safe space for children and young people to talk about any problem they might be facing, such as abuse, bullying, mental health issues, family problems, or anything else that is troubling them.

Key Features of Childline:

  1. 24/7 Helpline: Children and young people can call Childline at any time, day or night, on the freephone number 0800 1111. The calls are confidential, and the number does not show up on phone bills.
  2. Online Chat: Besides phone calls, Childline offers an online chat service where young people can communicate with a trained counsellor in real-time.
  3. Email: For those who prefer writing, Childline provides an email service where users can send a message and receive a response from a counsellor.
  4. Message Boards: Childline has moderated message boards where young people can share their experiences and offer support to one another.
  5. Website Resources: The Childline website offers a wide range of information and resources on various topics affecting young people, including mental health, relationships, and safety.
  6. Confidentiality: Childline is committed to confidentiality, but there are exceptions, especially if a child is in immediate danger or their life is at risk.

Purpose:

The primary goal of Childline is to provide a safe and supportive environment where children and young people can express themselves, seek advice, and get help without fear of judgment. The service aims to empower young people, helping them to make decisions and take actions that improve their well-being and safety.
