SmileyRose Ramblings by Frances Rose Agnes Napper (She/Her)

  • British Schooled Only

    May 7th, 2025

    Q. Have you ever lived outside of the UK, SmileyRose?

    A. Yes, I lived abroad for five months and also while my father was serving in the Royal Air Force.

My daughter currently resides in Australia, and my sister lives in Miami with my nieces. However, I have primarily lived in England and have attended only English schools. Throughout my education, all of my teachers—both within the UK and abroad—have been white British, from England.

The Royal Air Force schools overseas have experienced predominantly British teaching staff, in the British schools. Consequently, I have not been taught by teachers of non-British backgrounds.

My mother was educated in an American school, and my father in an English school. My father’s proficiency in spoken and written English was exceptional, which contributed to his role within the Education Department. While my observations are based on my personal experience, it is worth noting that English is widely spoken in both American and British contexts, particularly during my youth.

Although both my daughter and sister live abroad, they share similar backgrounds with me—having been raised and educated in England by British teachers.

  • RIP Pope Francis

    Apr 27th, 2025

I was Christened in a Roman Catholic church. The death and the funeral of Pope Francis yesterday was a very sad event. God bless your soul, Pope Francis, may you RIP.

Christians from the Catholic faith will be  mourning you all over the world.

I come from a huge Roman Catholic background. Both of my parents were staunch Roman Catholics, although my father changed his religion to the Church of England later in life.Coincidentally, my father passed away 8 years ago, this Easter. His name was indeed Francis. I was named after him, Frances, as I am the eldest daughter in the family. I was also named Agnes, my middle name, as I am the eldest grandchild in my mother’s family.

  • Afternoon Tea A Orton Hall

    Apr 27th, 2025

I had the pleasure of having Sunday afternoon tea at The Orton Hall, with Debbie not so long ago. It was a nice and peaceful afternoon.

Orton Hall in Orton Longueville, near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, is a historic country house built mainly in the 17th and 18th centuries, though parts are even older. It was originally a manor house for the Calthorpe family and later the Fitzwilliam family. The building is made from traditional stone, with elegant period features like grand fireplaces and oak panelling.

Today, Orton Hall is a hotel, set within about 20 acres of parkland and mature woodland.

There’s also a church, Holy Trinity Church, right next to it.
